Jerzy, a talented yet unfulfilled young man from a suburban workshop, dreams of flying more than a quiet life at a locksmith's bench. His first attempt to build his own airplane ends in a spectacular failure, but it is this very stubbornness that leads him to an extraordinary encounter with a wealthy Brazilian and his daughter, Janina. A bond quickly forms between the two young people, though for a time they are torn apart by a rival’s bitter intrigue. With the support of the millionaire, Jerzy makes up for his lack of formal education, earns his pilot’s qualifications, and builds a machine that is to become the beginning of a grand dream—a regular airline connecting Poland with Brazil. The future of this project depends on one flight. During the journey over the ocean, the radio fails, the plane loses its course, and the clock relentlessly ticks down the remaining fuel. Despite the critical situation, Jerzy proves his talent and courage: he lands safely in Rio de Janeiro, saving both the venture and his future. His success in the skies also becomes the seal of his love for Janina—forever inseparable from that moment on.
