Berlin, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Young Count Wentzel, fascinated by a mysterious girl, makes a bet with his friends on who will win her heart first. Fate intervenes when he rescues her from the hands of a drunken Baron Wertheim, leading to a conflict and a duel in which the baron insults him because of his Polish heritage. The girl turns out to be Jadwiga Chrząstkowska – a relative of the count’s grandmother, living in Mariampol in Greater Poland. Patriotically minded women reject Wentzel because of his Prussian demeanor, but over time, a feeling and a need for reconciliation with his own roots grow in the young aristocrat's heart. After many misunderstandings, intrigues, and dramatic events, Jadwiga finally returns his love.
