At the end of September 1944, during the final days of the Warsaw Uprising, Lieutenant Zadra (W. Gliński) leads his unit from Mokotów towards Śródmieście. They initially fight on the streets but are soon forced to descend into the sewers – a labyrinth that becomes their personal hell on earth. His companions include Mądry (E. Karewicz), his deputy; Cadet Korab (T. Janczar); the liaison Stokrotka (T. Iżewska); and Smukły (S. Mikulski), as well as the only civilian in the group, a pianist (W. Sheybal). As they navigate the dark, foul-smelling tunnels, the soldiers confront hunger, corpses, and toxic air. Any attempt to surface risks encountering German patrols. Zadra wrestles with the meaning of his mission: is he leading his men toward freedom or straight to death? Does rescuing the wounded weaken the rest of the group? Few soldiers will survive this journey, and the exit itself proves to be a trap. The film is based on the experiences of Jerzy Stefan Stawiński, who documented the harrowing realities of the Warsaw Uprising in his screenplays and stories.
