Director: Wojciech Jerzy Has
1947
Wojciech J. Has’s short-feature directorial debut. The film tells the story of the son of a poor shoemaker who dreams of owning the titular accordion. The instrument, which he sees in an antique shop, becomes a symbol of his desire for a better life. He is willing to give up everything for it – his shoes, his jacket, and even all his savings. The film portrays his inner struggle between dreams and the harsh reality, where he lacks the means to fulfill those desires.
