Franciszek Retman (S. Latałło) is studying physics and has a wide range of interests, seeking certain and reliable knowledge. He gets involved in scientific experiments, both for the sake of science and as a source of additional income, while simultaneously grappling with the challenges of personal life – starting a family, balancing work and studies, and experiencing marital and intellectual crises. The camera follows his development, highlighting both the universal and individual aspects of his fate. Krzysztof Zanussi employs an innovative approach, blending the narrative with philosophical, medical, and dreamlike digressions, incorporating illustrations of brain function, fetal development, and patient observations. This makes the film a meditation on the human condition and one’s place in the world, regardless of the era.
