A young woman accused of killing her own child is on trial. Sentenced to death, Jadzia evokes the sympathy of lawyer Krystyna, who succeeds in reopening the case and takes on her defense. Through Krystyna’s account, we learn about the girl’s tragic fate: coming from a poor family, Jadzia came to Warsaw in search of a better life but was seduced and abandoned. Without a job, money, or support, she gave birth to the child and, in a desperate act, attempted suicide—accidentally losing the baby in the process. Thanks to Krystyna, she is acquitted, and the lawyer takes her in. However, it soon turns out that Jadzia’s former seducer was Krystyna’s husband. When the man attempts to take his own life, both women care for him. Realizing that he only loves his wife, Jadzia quietly leaves.
