2005
After the sudden death of his wife, the Polish ambassador to Uruguay, Wiktor, struggles to balance his diplomatic duties with the collapse of his own world. A meeting with an old acquaintance, Oleg, now an influential Russian diplomat, stirs suspicions in him about Helena’s betrayal and the infiltration of opposition circles by the Russians. A young consul, Waldemar, arrives at the embassy with his wife, Oksana, and the lonely, unsteady Wiktor begins to pay her the attention he has lacked since his wife’s death. Meanwhile, the embassy is negotiating the purchase of helicopters, with the Russians as direct competitors. When signs of a possible document leak surface, Wiktor starts to suspect Oksana, discovers she is making duplicate copies, and tries to clarify his doubts with Oleg at a congress in Montevideo. After losing successive emotional anchors, the ambassador behaves increasingly eccentrically until he ultimately breaks diplomatic conventions and becomes persona non grata.
