The film’s action unfolds through spontaneous interviews with random passersby representing various age groups – from infants to nearly hundred-year-old elderly women. Through this “survey,” Kieślowski gathers answers to fundamental questions about life, revealing the diversity of human dreams, desires, fears, and expectations. Universal existential dilemmas intertwine with everyday concerns and needs that define life in Poland in 1979. The film serves as a collective portrait of Poles from that era – full of varied opinions, attitudes, and perspectives. On one hand, it raises questions about the general needs of humanity; on the other, it highlights the specific realities of the communist period in Poland, giving these questions an added social context. Kieślowski presents the complexity of human existence in a simple yet profound way, balancing between the universal and the local, the historical.
