A social drama crafted in the style of a traditional folk ballad. It tells the story of Haratyk, the leader of a Beskid village, who, after the war, becomes the informal head of his community. He builds a sawmill and a school, organizing village life, yet refuses to submit to the communist authorities. His resistance to the UB chief sparks a conflict, leading Haratyk and the highlanders to burn down the sawmill and flee into the forest. After years spent in prison, he comes to realize that cooperation with the authorities was, in fact, inevitable. The film explores the protagonist’s dilemmas as he fights for independence but must confront a new political reality.
