Director: Kazimierz Kutz
1969
The film tells the story of seven brothers fighting in the Second Silesian Uprising of 1920. Although the youngest, Gabriel, is still a minor, the entire family takes up the fight for the Polishness of Silesia, following the orders of their father and commander. Gabriel, by acquiring a German uniform, infiltrates the enemy ranks where he falls in love with a German nurse, forcing him to face a difficult choice. The struggle grows increasingly fierce, and not all the brothers will live to see the end of the uprising. Instead of a straightforward historical reconstruction, director Kazimierz Kutz creates a film charged with strong emotions and a poetic atmosphere. "Salt of the Black Earth" is not just a tale of war but also one of family solidarity and Silesian community spirit. Kutz, a master at capturing the Silesian soul, crafts a film that blends ethnographic, mythological, and emotional elements, offering a profound portrait of regional identity.
