Bartłomiej (Franciszek Pieczka) is a village preacher with extraordinary charisma, whose voice and words can move the entire congregation. He enjoys exceptional authority in the village—everyone dreams that he will deliver their funeral speech, known as the "recommendation." One day, Bartłomiej faces a difficult task: he must speak at the funeral of a little girl tragically killed by a car. The child's parents are plunged into despair—her mother Sonia grows closer to Bartłomiej’s grandson, little Bartek, sharing with him a book about the meaning of life and revealing her own femininity to him. The father, Tomasz, escapes into alcohol and religious fantasies, in which he meets Jesus during the Last Supper. Full of care and reflection, Bartłomiej talks with his deceased wife and his grandson, teaching the boy sensitivity to spiritual matters and a curiosity for philosophy. The story weaves together themes of grief, love, spiritual education, and the search for life’s meaning. It is a tale about the passage of time, family bonds, faith, and man’s connection with nature, where both the old master and the young apprentice learn to find their path to a higher order.
